A lifelong artist and a passionate explorer of color, light and the beauty of nature.
My primary medium is oil on canvas where I find I can express and interpret feelings into my paintings. I also love incorporating textures with rich colors into my impressionistic style of art. It thrills me to capture fleeting moments of quiet beauty on each canvas.
The natural world is where I grew up, surrounded by evergreens and misty coastlines of the Pacific Northwest, a landscape that sparked my lifelong love for the environment. My deep love for the earth continues to guide me. I strive to celebrate the natural world in my work while advocating for its protection. The fragility and wonder of our planet motivate me both as an artist and as an environment activist. I have served many years on boards and projects for salmon recovery and habitat restoration, along with painting it.
As a young girl, with an interest in art, I took art classes with the noted artist Della Bushnell, a friend of my mother’s. I immediately loved art! At age 8, I painted a beach scene with glass balls for my dad for a birthday present. My mom had it framed and he hung it in his restaurant in town. One night at the dinner table , his waitress called and told him a patron wanted to buy it. He replied “Oh no it’s not for sale, my daughter painted it for me.” I overheard him and said “Someone wants to buy my painting? Really?! Sell it, I will paint you another!” Hence began my life-long collaboration of art.
During my third year of college, I was fortunate to study abroad in the beautiful and art rich city of Madrid, each Friday spending the day immersed in art and art history at the Prado. There I fell in love with the artist Berthe Morisot, feminist icon of the 1800’s and her Viridian green hues. She was a woman who boldly competed with men of the impressionistic movement, trying to be accepted both with a new art style and as a woman artist. She inspired and motivated me.
Years later, I would go on to teach Women’s Issues as an adjunct professor at Boise State University and Quinnipiac College. Later, I donated a floral watercolor and its copyrights to the PEO Women’s Organization with proceeds benefitting women’s scholorships. These are still sold online today.
While raising three daughters alongside my husband in Connecticut, I authored and promoted three cookbooks that were self-illustrated, again marrying art with the rhythm of my life.
Over time I’ve enjoyed experimenting with watercolors and mixed media, always curious to see how different tools and materials can bring new life to an idea. My art is deeply personal, shaped by a lifetime of beautiful experiences and a constant awe for the world around me.
In my silver years, I find inspiration in the quiet majesty of the desert, its shifting light, resilient plant life and vast skies with everchanging mountains hues. I enjoy painting with the Desert Plein Air Artists and the creative community here in Palm Desert.
Creating has always been my way of connecting - with others, with memory, with natural beauty and with the present moments. Each piece holds a story, and I’m grateful to share me and my life with you.
